I would like to figure out where this shell came from. It has been made into a lamp. Shell marked on bottom: SALUTING 40mm 40mm MK2 44 AL LOT 0739

Considering the limited amount of ammo and the greater possible damage per round, did the cannon on a Bf-109 fire like a machine gun or was it single pull, single shot?
