US6 / 4 mm straight needles

Gauge:

In stocking stitch, work 23 sts over 28 rows = 4x4 in  (without blocking) OR
In pattern (fisherman’s rib) work 17 sts over 21.5 rs knit column rows (43 worked rows) = 4x4

i wanna make a ridiculous cable sweater with dramatic braids. how would i go about making something like this? when i cable braids, they lie too flat. would a wider braid help?
