It is the air pockets that trap heat, so alpaca fleece can be perceived as being warmer than Merino. Alpaca fleece is also naturally water-repellent. Because it does not absorb water at all, it retains its warmth even when wet. This all makes sense; after all, alpacas are from the mountains of South America, where they have been bred for thousands of years. Their coats have to protect them from the cold and the elements!
