This added length is required for some swap due to the length from the firewall to factory shifter hole, like on the 86 chassis, Mustang S197 and S550, or the BMW Z4 The T56 Magnum XL checks all the right boxes for strength, durability, and fit within this 86 or BMW Z4 chassis.
