Robert J. Evans, 28-year-old Vice-President of Evan-Picone, large New York sportswear manufacturing company, was signed yesterday to play the role of the late Irving Thalberg in 'Man of a Thousand Faces' with James Cagney at Universal-International Studios, after being 'discovered' at the poolside of the Beverly Hills Hotel by Thalberg's widow, Norma Shearer. Knowing that U-I was seeking an actor to portray Thalberg in the film, a life story of Lon Chaney, Miss Shearer became an impromptu talent scout, rushed Evans to the studio, and ten minutes later he was signed for the role of Edward Muhl, studio production chief.
