A light-emitting diode (LED) is a p-n junction diode that emits light when forward current passes through the p-n junction of compound semiconductor layers. When forward current passes through an LED, the injected carrier electrons move and recombine with holes, causing a difference in the band-gap energy between the materials forming the p-n junction to be released in the form of light.
