One of the most striking things about the film is just how carefully Peter Jackson manages to balance the childlike qualities of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit – written some 18 years before the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and before much of his mythology for the world had been fully fleshed out – while still maintaining continuity with the darker elements of the first three films.
