Choose 1 yard increments of our Handwoven Hemp-Cotton Yardage Irregulars and the fabric is 20 inches wide. Also check out our Hemp Towels!
Sold by the yard (36 or 91cm). The fabric is 14-16 inches wide. This yardage is the same as our handwoven hemp-cotton yardage but is considered Irregular as the fabric has stains and marks on it, weaving errors or small holes or tears. The fabric is unused but acquired blemishes due to its age. Nearly all the irregulars are stains and discolorations. The fabric is perfect for overdyeing, eco printing and bundle dyeing and surface design. Please refer to the images in the product gallery to get a sense of the discolorations and marks. Note that we are unable to select among the fabrics to include or exclude specific marks or stains. The long lengthwise stripe down the center of most of this fabric is because the fabric was folded in half lengthwise and rolled like a hemp cinnamon roll. The edge discolored after decades of storage. This is vintage fabric, anywhere from 50-80 years old. The fabric was woven for toweling and household textiles, and is strong and durable. Each 36 fabric length weighs approximately 110-130 grams. The width of the fabric ranges from 14.5 inches to 16 inches (37-41cm). Each roll of fabric varies in length and if you order multiple yards, we may send you yardage from more than one roll. Also check out our hemp towels! About Hemp Hemp is the ancient new wonder fiber, and rightly so: hemp production is now legal in the United States. This is a huge win to create a more sustainable fiber source. Hemp is considered among the first agricultural crops as traces of it have been found and dated to 8000 BCE in China and Taiwan. The plant uses minimal water, is pest-resistant, and fast-growing. It is a nitrogen-fixing plant with a deep tap root that helps enrich and condition the soil. At harvest time, hemp stalks are cut, bundled and dried. The tough outer cortex is removed through a natural process called retting to break down the outside of the stalk. Finally the fine inner fibers are collected, scoured, washed and sun bleached, and then spun into yarn. Hemp possesses great strength, softness and durability while its weight and drape are similar to linen and the fabric softens with age and use. And of course, it dyes beautifully.
