Jesus is not speaking about something we do only at the beginning of the Christian life, but about our everyday discipleship. Being a Christian means laying ourselves on the altar of daily obedience. Jesus is calling us to daily crucifixion on our own personal cross.
When Jesus told his disciples that they would need to deny themselves and take up their crosses daily, they didn't get the point. Fortunately, something happened that made it all clear.
