We all know that the cartridge known as .38-40 is really a .40-40. Just for the sake of pondering, what kind of performance would a "true" .38-40 have? You know, a .44-40 case necked down to take .357" bullets backed by 40 grains of black powder or a more or less equivalent smokeless load.
